As we celebrate 2 years of growth, the game industry is expected to exceed a whopping $196 billion by 2022!

According to Google Trends, the video game industry has been experiencing substantial growth for the past few years and thanks to COVID-19, we’re also seeing the rapid expansion of gaming technology to almost every sector and household.

The Expansion of XR

The year 2019 was a landmark growth year for XR or extended reality, which is the umbrella term for augmented reality and virtual reality (AR and VR) together. It didn’t just mark the increase in the use of XR in games. It also witnessed the growth of its use outside gaming and entertainment. Design firms, marketing outfits, and even in people in medicine have started integrating these technologies in their operations.

CompareCamp.com expects that by 2023, round $8.9 billion will be spent investing in training-related activities, $4.3 billion for industrial maintenance, and $3.9 billion for retail showcasing. Of course, the biggest use case would be for XR gaming and feature viewing at $20.8 billion.

More Careers in Gaming

According to LinkedIn, hiring Specialized Engineers (including Game Developers) is on the rise in 2021.  There was a 20% increase in job vacancies in the game industry over the past year and is expected to increase threefold over the next five years, according to a report by data provider Vacancysoft.

When it comes to opportunities in the gaming industry, Indeed said it is time to look past the usual suspects of Silicon Valley and even the West Coast. As the industry has expanded, new hotspots are emerging, particularly in the South.

While traditional gaming studios have settled in cities like Austin, Texas – which is home to over 6% of all jobs for game designers and developers nationwide – Charlotte, North Carolina boasts the most career opportunities for AR/VR according to Indeed.

The Heightened Talent War in Gaming

Demand for top talent has matched the expansion and integration of gaming technology across sectors. Many organizations have seen first-hand the challenges of attracting and retaining top talent. Tech giants like Apple, Google, Amazon, and EA Sports attract large applicant pools and pose a challenge for smaller development studios and companies to hire top candidates among fierce competition.
